Learning to Relax

A poem about the art of chilling the f**k out.

If my cats have taught me one thing, it’s how to relax

when I wake up, I see them purring and content, I fall

back to bed, a smile on my face, cuddly in my covers

Fiona nudges her white fuzzy face against my arm

while Sebastian curls up on my pillow, and it vibrates

with his comforting snore

while my lover quietly gets dressed

prays, drinks her coffee, and leaves for work

In an hour I’ll do the same, but for now

I rest, the cats cheering me on

It used to be I resisted comfort like the plague,

wished it away from myself like it was poison

this was from my runner days

when I always had to be improving

and could never just stand still

now all I want to hear is quiet

all I want to feel is simple happiness

I want to give myself the pleasure

of not needing anything more than the moment

cats can, so why can’t I

curl up all day by the gate and wait

to sleep and snuggle with the ones I love
