How to Find Out What Skill You Should Learn Next

Don’t start practicing like a pro straight away.

We all get inspired when we see our idols perform a skill at a world-class level. We dream of doing the same. It looks fantastic when they perform their craft effortlessly and even manage to do it with a smile on their face. You think you have found the one thing you want to do in life.

But wait a moment. What you have seen is the end product of thousands of hours of practice. For the last ten years, they may have practiced for hours every day. They have had to postpone studies, say no to doing fun things with friends and gone through extremely demanding physical and mental training. Are you still sure you want to do this? Before you have even tried the skill. Practicing like a pro from the beginning will overwhelm most people.

Most of us would love to have world-class skills, but few of us would like to go through the training it takes to get there. Before deciding to go all-in on something, it is usually a good idea to have a taste first. Here are some tips that will help you find the skill that you should pursue.

It isn’t easy to know what activities you will like the most before you have tested them. Before committing to becoming a professional, it’s a good idea to try them out. Maybe an activity is not as fun as you thought it would be. Or it can be way more fun. Try surfing, playing a musical instrument, cooking, making art or salsa dancing. The only way to find out what you like is by trying a range of skills before deciding.

Trying many different activities lets you improve fast in many skills as improvement is fastest and easiest in the beginning. In the first 10–20 hours of practice in any skill, most of us will improve dramatically. Even if you don’t continue to practice the skill, you will still benefit from trying it out.
