I think we will look like ourselves

Will America go forward…or backwards?

DATELINE: February 18, 2022

America is on the precipice of revolution. That was the sentiment in 1775, when colonists, angered over new taxes, took to the streets of Boston and took matters into their own hands. Dumping hundreds of boxes of tea in the harbor was hardly the call for war, but it encouraged others to consider a different brand of ‘freedom’ not yet considered: to be free of the ‘tyrant’ acrossed the pond, King George.

There are great similarities and fantastic differences between these two tales, centuries apart, but the most compelling factor is that the underlying social context is the same: wealthy white men want to rule the world.

From those founding days until today, those not white, not male in this nation of freedom, liberty, and justice have strained to see those mores impact their own lives. While written into our laws, the nation has never fully delivered on its promise to provide for a democratic republic, where all persons have the same rights, the same access, and the same citizenship.

Thomas Paine wrote: “These are the times that try men’s souls,” as he tried to influence colonists to support the effort to fight for liberty from the tyrant king. We are certainly being tested once again, from within, as each American prepares himself for the battle to come: the battle from within.

What is ‘authoritarianism?’ What would America look like and how would it change the way each of us lived? Is this a new form of government not seen before in this nation, or is it simply a return to a time when America was owned and operated by wealthy white men?
