Start with Why

During my undergraduate studies, I was lucky enough to take a course entitled the Art of Leadership. The course focused on individual leadership, team leadership, and organizational leadership. Through the course, I became a better listener, a better teammate, and a better communicator.

The most significant impact came from the homework from week one of the course. We watched the Ted Talk by Simon Sinek — Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Action. Following which I binge read the corresponding book Start With Why. It changed my perspective on what being a leader in practice meant and changed my leadership approach. As a result, I started to develop fuller and more meaningful relationships with those around me.

Ever since high school, I had the aspiration of going to law school. I can distinctly remember the ah-ha moment when I developed this dream. I was writing my grade 12 law exam, and one of the questions required us to apply the Criminal Code to the fact pattern. The issue, in this case, was whether or not the alleged threat was imminent. I wrote out my answer to the question, and when I got to the last line, I realized everything I wrote was wrong. I scrambled to erase everything and changed my answer with seconds to spare. Thankfully I got the answer right. I loved the mental gymnastics involved in thinking through the legal problem.

Knowing I wanted to go to law school, I started researching law schools in Ontario. I found excellent information on the statistical data for admissions and the program structure, but what I found to be lacking were personal experience stories. I could read through a law schools’ website, and it would tell me what a day in the life of their law students was like, but I wanted to hear it right from the source, unfiltered.

I started emailing people I knew who attended law schools to get their perspective on it. I spoke with lawyers, all of who provided an array of reviews. I started reading online forums, but something was missing for me personally. I wanted to be able to read someone’s journey through law school from start to finish. I tried to understand what worked for them, what did not work, what they loved about school, what they hated, and what the realities of law school were without sugar coating. Simply put, I wanted to experience law school vicariously.

Having started law school in August 2019, I can now share what law school is like with others. During orientation, I was beyond lucky to have met my co-founder, Ryan Delmar. We have built a team of writers and editors, each of whom brings their strengths and shares their law school perspectives. As a team, we have applied the principles from Start With Why for Law School Life and Beyond.

Law School Life and Beyond will provide prospective or current law students with a one-stop-shop for the transparent version of everything law school. We want to give the reader easy access to all the information you need to make an informed decision for your future.

We want to bring value through our articles that apply to the law school journey. From the admissions process, studying for the LSAT, acceptance and rejection stories, what law school exams are like and how we study, the Law School Life and Beyond team is dedicated to providing the reader with the opportunity to experience law school vicariously through us.

The Law School Life and Beyond team are here to provide you with the insight you want to read about. If you have any specific topics or questions, please message us. We are only as good as our followers, and we are humbled to have the opportunity to share our experiences with you.
