How Netflix Can Win The Arms Race Against Disney

But knocking off Blockbuster wasn’t an end goal. After that, Netflix used the internet as its distribution channel. This allowed it to scale quickly and internationally.

Then, there’s Amazon Prime, which has its own rapid-fire production studio. And Apple is enhancing its own Apple TV.

To add to Netflix’s challenge, Disney+ is launching at USD $7 per month, while Netflix starts at $10. Netflix now has to compete not only on the quality and quantity of the content but also on price. Disney is profitable and can sustain charging lower prices for much longer. Netflix is in a very expensive arms race.

Fortunately, Netflix has options.

Netflix started as a technology company and has morphed into a media company. To move forward, it’s going to have to disrupt the competition. But in the process, it will also disrupt itself. It’s risky, but not changing its strategy would be even riskier.

As an entrepreneur who helps large companies align technology capabilities with business strategy, these kinds of pivot and growth challenges are familiar to me.
