Are Books Better Than Movies?

There are different ways to get a story from different sources in modern times. Books have been good sources for stories, but movies are getting more popular and have the same story with the books. Despite the similarities, reading books and watching movies give details through different ways, they have a lot in common, but there are some differences that makes the readers remain faithful to reading books. Both books and movies are works of art shared to people who want to escape their reality. It offers a whole new different kind of voyeurism where only the eyes and the mind can travel. Every page from the book or every scene from the movie offers a whole new world that appeal to a person’s most inner desires.

Although watching movies seems to be more convenient, people are still reading books. The reason is that books give more details to the readers and usually reveal more characters that are not shown in the movies. Movie producers need to cut away some details because they need to squeeze everything into one to two hours. Books can attract the reader to continue reading and give some prolonged suspense so that the reader will be hooked or tempted to finish the book to find out the truth. Reading books can improve the reader’s writing and reading skills, but on the other hand, watching movies brings entertainment.

By reading the books, the reader has to open his mind for imaginations. Books only show words, and the images of the story are imagined in the brain. On the other hand, movies give a particular picture of the story to the audiences, and the audiences get details through visual and hearing. The audiences can only get what is shown in the movies but can’t think outside the box for more creative thinking. The readers can have different feedbacks to the story, but the audiences can only agree with the movies; therefore, reading books and watching movies make the readers or audiences response differently.

In a movie, you don’t have to imagine a scene. You just see it. While reading a book, you have to imagine how things are going on. So this means that when books have a long paragraph describing the scene, the movie doesn’t need to do so. But this has a disadvantage too. In a movie, the scene often goes unnoticed, but in a book, while reading, you pay attention to every line, and create the scene in your head in fine detail. In a book you’d even know a characters point of view which you wouldn’t necessarily know while watching a movie. And, while reading you fall in love with the soul of a character, but when you watch the movie their beauty captivates you. When we read, our mind meets the author halfway. The author gives us the words to construct the scenery and situations, but our own imaginations fill in the rest of the blanks. It’s because of this personal effort we feel so attached to what we read. We concoct our own perfect vision of the book, making it almost impossible for any two individuals see that same exact thing.

For me personally what makes a difference between a book and a movie is the mood that I am in that moment. Sometimes I like to read books because I find some kind of peace while reading and I can actually see clearly what the author of the book is trying to catch up to us readers. We feel deeply attached to the characters. We read their deepest thoughts and feelings, and in doing so, they become a part of us.

We lose a bit of that attachment while watching the movie because we become a viewer instead of a participant. So do movies help or hurt the reading experience? I think the answer is neither. It is a great escape that can lose you to your core for a limited amount of time. A movie just shows us a different interpretation of the story we read and allows us to see someone else’s vision. And despite what people say, I think it’s impossible to say if the book is always better than the film, because it’s comparing apples to oranges — two great individual things that share similarities, but can never fully act as a substitute for the other.
