I Have Had Many Careers in My Life

I started my professional career as a musician in Puerto Rico.

I am originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I come from a long line of singers, actors and musicians.

My grandmother, who was originally from Canary Iles, Spain; studied singing at the Milano, Academy; was an opera singer.

She sang at the famous, Colon theater in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

My father, was an actor. He acted in various plays, but was not very successful.

My mother studied ballet, and she also danced at the Colon Theater.

She later in life started to sing and dance at various cabarets throughout Latin America.

When my mother moved to New York, she married her boy friend from Argentina.

He was a saxophone player, who had played with several big jazz bands in Buenos Aires.

My stepfather had also accompanied my grandmother while she sang at the Radio in Buenos Aires.

So it is only natural that I was introduced to music at a very young age.

My parents had a travelling combo in the US, and we travelled from state to state with the combo, to various hotels and clubs in the Southern United States.

My parents were like gypsies, trying to make a living.

This was very hard for me.

Very often we only stayed in one place for 1 to 3 months fulfilling a contract, and I went through about ten schools during the year, therefore I did not have much stability.

My mother sent for me in 1960, and my grandparents and I moved to the US.

This was an exiting time for me, because I was going to see my mother, whom I had not seen for a long time.

My grandfather was very frustrated, because he could not find a job, not knowing the English language.

Because of this situation, my grandfather decided to move to Puerto Rico.

My grandmother joined him a year later.

My parents, my little brother and I joined them in 1965.

It was only natural that my parents, continue with their musical career in Puerto Rico.
