Noticing Something New

Day 6 of a 30-day experiment

A line of traffic cones on a street.

A still-bright tennis ball in a yard.

A sticker on a concrete post.

Googly eyes on a metal post.

Caramels by the snack area.

For all of these, it’s fair to ask if they were actually new — or simply new to me.

I started a new-to-me book today. It was too cynical to be enjoyable; it dampened my mood. But the feeling could have been caused by being pinned by the shoulders of the people on either side of me on the train. Sometimes it seems the smaller you are, the more of your space some people decide to take. It’s funny how the environment you’re in can shape your experience of a book.

At work, I got new assignments to try to get my head around.

But the most important thing of all: I developed a new appreciation for puddles. While there may have been a puddle in a particular place, each puddle I saw today was a brand new one that had never existed before and would never exist again. They have relatively short life spans. This realization made me want to wish each new puddle a quiet, “Hello! Welcome to the world!” I felt no urge to say goodbye though.
