What was it like at the original Birdland club in New York?

In the 15 years that the original club was open, over 1.4 million people attended. Admission at the time was just $1.50. The club was incredibly influential on the culture of the time, with new trends in fashion and music emerging. Performers took the stage at 9pm each night. There were frequently double or even triple bills, keeping fans entertained until the early hours of the morning.

Birdland had the pleasure of hosting some of the greatest acts in the history of jazz, starting with its first headliner and namesake, Charlie “Yardbird” Parker. Other greats took the stage throughout Birdland’s original 15-year run, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk.
